Lesson 2: Investigating Tourist Experiences from the Inside

Tourism affects both visitors to communities and the people who live there. This lesson analyzes the tourist experience from the host’s community perspective.

When visitors go to Shilong and Metang, they investigate the Miao people and their culture. These trips provide tourists with cross-cultural experiences. Visitors usually take photos and films of their visits and purchase tourist items. They may keep journals as well. When they return home, the travelers tell stories about what they experiences to their families and friends. Conversely, Shilong and Metang residents also watch the tourists and they relay stories about their encounters. Pretend you and your family went to these two towns as tourists. In an art form of your choosing, tell a story that the Miao might tell about your visit after you leave. Post this tale about your visit from a Miao perspective.
