Woven Quilts: Lui Yu Xiang 刘玉香

Pen drawing of a weaving studio

Lui Yu Xiang is an accomplished weaver in Quan Bei Village. With help from her sister-in-law, she makes brightly colored cloth that is used for making quilts. Together they can make one quilt in a day. There are many weaving shops along the street where she sells her cloth. The weavers demonstrate how to make the Eye-of-the-Cat pattern, which is just one of about 2,000 different weaving designs found in Shandong Province. Lui Yu Xiang learned to weave from her mother, who learned from her mother. Today few girls under the age of 20 know how to make the fabric. The two weavers work with polyester thread, although cotton is more traditional. They use the length of their shop to wind enough warp for two full quilts. Both women work long hours, making 20,000 to 30,000 yuan a year, which is approximately $3,000 to $4,000 in US dollars.
